GED 2002:
Sample Test Questions for Mathematics

Sample Questions: Mathematics Test

The GED 2002 Mathematics Test measures the ability to solve math problems typical of those studied in a high school curriculum. The subject matter for the Test questions is drawn from three areas:

  • Arithmetic
  • Algebra
  • Geometry

Directions and Sample Questions for Mathematics:

Read the question below and choose the best answer from the choices given.

1] If 10% of a town’s population of 10,000 people moved away, how many people would remain in the town?

    a. 100
    b. 900
    c. 1000
    d. 9000
    e. 9900

Solving questions on the Math Test often involves more than one step. Here is one method you could use to solve this problem. First, compute 10% of 10,000 by dividing 10,000 by 10. Now you know that 1,000 people moved. The questions asks how many remained? Subtract 1,000 from the total population to find the answer, 9,000 (option d.)

Question 2 is based on information found in the following graph.

Graph Sample 2] The figure above shows how the tax dollar was spent in a given year. According to the figure, what percent of the tax dollar was left after direct payments to individuals and national defense expenses?

    a. 3%
    b. 11%
    c. 33%
    d. 67%
    e. 114%

About one-third of the questions in the Mathematics Test refer to charts, or graphic materials like this one. The question requires you to understand the information presented and recognize the categories of spending described as equal to 100%. The phrase “was left” indicates the problem requires subtraction. The sum of 42% indicated as Direct Payments and 25% indicated as national Defense adds up to 67%. Subtracting that sum from 100% leaves a result of 33% (option c.)

3] A part-time job pays $6.75 per hour. Which of the following expressions best represents an employee’s total earnings if the employee works a total of 2 hours on Monday, 3 hours on Tuesday, 4 hours on Wednesday, 5 hours on Thursday, and 6 hours on friday?

    a. 2+3+4+5+6
    b. 10+6.75
    c. 10 (6.75)
    d. 20 + 6.75
    e. 20 (6.75)

Some questions in the Mathematics Test do not ask for numerical solutions. Instead, they ask you to select the best method for setting up the problem to arrive at a solution.

The first step is to identify what is required from the question. In this case it is the phrase “total earnings.” Next, you must understand that total earnings will be the product of the hourly rate of $6.75 times the number of hours worked.

Understanding how total earnings is computed should make clear that the solution must include the number 6.75 multiplied by some other number. The other number is the sum of 2+3+4+5+6 or 20 hours worked. So, (option e) is the best answer.

Options (a), (b), and (d) do not use multiplication as a function, while the option (c) uses an incorrect number of hours as a multiplier of the hourly rate.
